HOW is a registered 501(c)3 non-profit organization based in the USA, whose staff consists of all volunteers. Its mission is to provide hope and care to neglected, abandoned, and orphaned children in deprived areas of the world with a specific focus on VietNam. My family are from Vietnam and fled to the UK during the Vietnam war. In June this year I went back to Vietnam for the first time. It was a bitter sweet experience... it was so amazing to experience the beautiful culture and people of Vietnam, but it was also incredibly saddening to witness the poverty, the hardships and the suffering that many Vietnamese people endure on a daily basis. The stark contrast between my western life and the life I could have had, if my family had remained in Vietnam couldn’t have been any more different… … I could have been the orphaned child on the streets, with no home to go to and no one to care for me … I could have been the sick child, too poor to pay for medicine or see a doctor … I could have been the exhausted lady working tirelessly from the crack of dawn to late at night, in the excruciating sun – just trying to earn enough money to feed my family. … It could have been me. What seems so simple has taken 8 months of a VILLAGE OF HELP! EB DVD translation… Oh where to begin? Helping Orphan's Worldwide (HOW) Inc. has been involved with EB (Epidermolysis Bullosa) which is a rare genetic skin disease that causes the skin to be so fragile that even the slightest touch will separate the layers of the skin. The skin literally breaks, resulting in painful blisters and open wounds. A mother may never be able to hold her child tightly because the skin would peel off and bleed. Children with EB may never run or play as other children because even the slightest friction will cause them great pain. It has been almost two years now since we learned about EB, but we continue to educate ourselves and the nurses and doctors as well as the families in HCMC Vietnam. We have all been overwhelmed and have been trying to figure out how in the world we can get the families some affordable help as well as a better understanding of EB Wound Care. We have had so many wonderful people helping us, from DebRA , to Brightsky Australia, to Dr.’s and Nurses from around the world not only to come out and provide training but also donations of wound care materials, and the list goes on and on and on! We were given a DVD that shows wound care treatment and explains exactly how to gently treat each wound and believe me this is a complicated and long drawn out process that is so overwhelming it makes one want to run and hide but there is no time for hiding and running, only jumping in and getting things done to give the children relief. This can take from 3 to 5 hours DAILY and is painful for the children but will help to save their life and give them comfort and healing ability if done correctly. This blog was written by Helping Orphans Worldwide, HOW (VIP) Volunteer Immersion Program VOLUNTEER manager. Kerri Galligan has heart and soul, she is giving, loving and caring. Kerri dedicated 3 months out of the summer to work on our programs with the volunteers and to make sure that all details were taken care of with great attention to detail. She has supported our volunteers, organized each trip and made sure to continue a wonderful working program with each of our partners. Please meet Kerri and read her beautiful description of HOW's progress with the help of so many wonderful volunteers, donors, friends, and so much love! This blog was written by a wonderful HOW/FHV (Helping Orphan's Worldwide, HOW/Free Hugs Vietnam tutor after a volunteer session with the 26 orphanaed girls living at the Lotus Shelter in Vietnam. Le Quyenh is one of many HOW/FHV volunteers who volunteer 2 hours every Sunday to teach the girls English with "Tell Me More" program on the computers donated to them through a grant given by Electric Aid ESB in Ireland from another HOW VIP(Volunteer Immersion Program) Volunteer who was able to come on a trip to Vietnam and see for herself the good and change the funds have made possible and also to spend time to get to know the gilrs. HOW/FHV volunteers have all made 1 year comitments to show up each Sunday. This is particularly lovely because they are all students, and some have jobs as well. They are always on time (5 minutes early as requested by HIllary haha), they have a great sense of team and if one can't show up they call on one that was not scheduled. HOW is lucky to have so many dedicated volunters and as usual HOW continues to have zero paid staff and are all vounteers including all board members. Please enjoy Le Qyynh's Blog. Kerri Galligan (Helping Orphans Worldwide, HOW Irish board member and HOW's VIP (Volunteer Immersion Program) VOLUNTEER, volunteer manager... HOW has zero paid staff :) This blog was written by Kerri Galligan, HOW's VIP (Volunteer Immersion Program) VOLUNTEER , Volunteer Manager and HOW Ireland Board Member. Kerri has given up 3 months of her life to manage the VIP program and work hard while in the country. She gave up her job to do this and also all volunteers. Kerri is a volunteer and is not paid for her work. She fundraises for HOW on top of it, and is a joy and delight! HOW is very lucky to have Kerri Galligan on our team. This is Kerri's blog regarding District 4 Education Center and how things are not going as planned and this is why Hillary Brown (me) ha-ha, will be going to Vietnam for 6 months to make sure all programs are on track. Things have a way of unraveling when we don't have one board member there at all times. We are lucky enough to have Free Hugs Vietnam but because of cultural reasons it's more effective to have an elder person in country working along with the Vietnamese Government together to help the children in the best way possible and the most productive way possible. This will continue to be a team effort, each and every program. We wanted to give an update on our little sweet friend Huy's journey living with EB (Epidermolysis Bullosa) which is a rare genetic skin disease that causes the skin to be so fragile that even the slightest touch will separate the layers of the skin. The skin literally breaks, resulting in painful blisters and open wounds. A mother may never be able to hold her child tightly because the skin would peel off and bleed. Huy has been Helping Orphans Worldwide, HOW's EB representative and spokesperson for Vietnam and for International EB Awareness Week and EB Awareness around the world. Huy has been a friend of HOW now for several years and he is one tough cookie as well as a very smart young guy with a great sense of humor and a beautiful heart! I LEARNED A LOT OF THINGS FROM HOW AND THE CHILDREN I MET (HOW/FHV Volunteer 2012) Hi, my name’s An Khang. I’m from Vietnam. This summer, I volunteered as an interpreter for Helping Orphans Worldwide (HOW). I have tons of happy memories and useful experiences. When I sent my CV to apply to be an interpreter and then had the interview with HOW staff, I just wanted to have a more exciting life than I had been having: studying all the time and being surrounded by homework, assignments and deadlines. And thanks to HOW, especially the children I met, I can bring inspiration back and ease my mind a lot. I feel like I’m much more happy now and helpful as well. This blog is written by one of Helping Orphans Worldwide, HOW VIP (Volunteer Immersion Program) volunteers, Fiona Corr. Fiona has worked very hard for a year to raise funds and awareness for HOW as well as you will read was the reason HOW was given a grant from the company she works for to buy 5 computers, "Tell Me More" English program's, a printer, and supplies for the year. It is HOW's intention to supply scholarships for 2013 for the children to continue not only their HOW English program but to keep them all in school with uniforms and books for the year. This program is called the Lotus Shelter Program. There are 26 girls living here, HOW has been involved with the Lotus Shelter since 2008 and have seen amazing changes happen! Our volunteers visit them each year as well as our HOW/Free Hugs Vietnam volunteers tutoring weekly for English lessons through the year. We do yoga with the girls, take them on swimming trips and many other self-esteem building fun activities. Fiona's blog will warm your heart!
